With the amount of available WordPress Themes numbering well into the thousands, finding the best WordPress theme for your business or blog can be a frustrating process. Themespotter was designed to try to simplify that process by featuring all the best WordPress themes from the top theme designers, and then making them easy to search, sort and demo. I know what you’re thinking…”yeah, yeah, yeah…that’s great and all, but how do I know what is the best theme for mybusiness or blog?”.Great question! Only you know the type of brand you are looking to build for yourself or your business, but there are some steps you can take to help narrow down your focus. [...]

Switch Your Business Website to WordPress

Why WordPress is the perfect platform for your business website.

Prior to discovering WordPress, I had used and demoed a lot of different business website software options. I ran a couple eCommerce websites using software such as 3dCart, Volusion, Yahoo! Store, and OS Commerce (while demoing countless eCommerce software options), helped design a couple business websites based on Homestead software (now Intuit Websites), and experimented with website creation software such as WebStudio, SquareSpace, Adobe Dreamweaver, Xara and many others. WordPress Free Themes vs. Premium Themes

As WordPress has grown in functionality and popularity, thousands of great website themes/templates have been developed, making starting or improving your website easier than ever. Theme developers range from students experimenting with building a theme as a project, to large-scale businesses with many experienced developers churning out several new WordPress themes a month. Some WordPress themes are free, while other themes are considered ‘premium’, in that you pay to download and use them.

When I recommend premium themes to people, the first response I sometimes get is ‘why would I pay for a WordPress theme when there are many free WordPress themes available”? I’ve ran a few websites built on WordPress (including this one), and asked that same question at first too. If you are looking for a theme for your website and are weighing the options of free WordPress themes vs. premium themes, I will discuss the pros and cons of both options. [...]

It’s been a little while since I told you about some new WordPress theme designers added to the site, so this post is to quickly introduce you to 3 theme developers at once (are you jumping out of your chair yet?). If you’re new to this site, I like to tell people a bit about some of the people behind some of the best WordPress themes and try to point out what makes their themes unique…don’t worry..I’ll keep it short & sweet.

How to Find the Best WordPress Theme for Your Business

I originally wrote this article for ezinearticles.com, and the original post can be viewed here.

You’ve probably already heard how WordPress is a very popular platform for bloggers, and chances are, a majority of the blogs you read every day were created with WordPress. While it is the best blogging software available, thanks to some great theme developers, WordPress has now also become arguably the best platform for business websites.

WordPress is very easy to learn how to use, very easy to customize and scale to your business, is incredibly affordable, and lets you chose your own hosting company (opposed to getting ripped off for hosting by hosted website solutions). WordPress.org software is free, and you can then then easily add themes (otherwise known as templates) that integrate perfectly with WordPress, letting you get virtually any type of website up and running within minutes. WordPress themes can let you have better websites than people and companies that pay thousands of dollars to developers to build their websites. Best of all, outstanding premium WordPress themes usually cost under $100. I’ve personally spent well over $100 a month for hosted website software that was honestly not as good as WordPress. Using WordPress can easily save you or your company a ton of cash that can be better used to market your business. [...]

How to Convert Post Tags to Custom Taxonomies in WordPress

I’ve seen several blogs and forums trying to tackle the issue of converting post tags to custom taxonomies in WordPress without an easy resolution, so I figured I’d tackle this here, since I recently converted a bunch of tags to taxonomies on this site.

When a lot of people start using WordPress, they typically group posts (or products, in the case of business and shopping websites) into into categories and tags. While this can be fine for basic blogs, business websites can be better organized by using custom taxonomies. For example, if you have a website selling CD’s or downloadable music, you may want to have different genres listed as your main categories, and then use custom taxonomies to display information such as the Band, Record Label, and Release Date (and letting your customers also sort by those terms). If your website has already been set up using only categories and tags, it is not too late to change your tags into individual taxonomies to help organize your site.

Finding the best WordPress business themes just got easier!

We’ve been working hard to release some great updates to Themespotter.

You can now sort WordPress business themes by category, theme designer/developers, release date, theme style and popular features, as well as searching by text within any category or feature (or combination of categories).

Additionally, we scaled back and combined the amount of theme categories, which should make searching even faster and easier. With the flexible nature of website templates, many themes can be used for various purposes, so it makes sense that certain themes are included in more than one category. In some cases though, themes were nearly always being listed in the same 2 categories. In cases like that, we just combined the 2 categories into 1. We also eliminated a couple categories that were very specific and have very few WordPress themes designed for them, and moved the themes into other appropriate categories.

Lastly, the site’s text search has been greatly improved to show much more accurate results.

Making it even easier to search for the best WordPress business themes!

There likely won’t be any new WordPress themes added to the site for the next few days, as I am working on adding some great new searching and sorting features to Themespotter. This involves adding information to all the existing themes on the site, as well as some other site changes. It’s quite a time-consuming process, but I think it will be well worth it.

A question for you: What are some of the most important features you look for in a WordPress theme?

Soon, finding the best WordPress theme for your business will be even easier. Stay tuned.

A couple new theme designers

I have started adding WordPress business themes from Themeforest and and Karma Themes to Themespotter.

Themeforest is a website template marketplace where independent theme developers can sell their themes.  In addition to WordPress themes, Themeforest sells themes for a variety of platforms, including Joomla, Shopify, OScommerce, Magento, and a variety of others. Themeforest has literally thousands of website templates, and well over a thousand just for WordPress. While I won’t be featuring all of the WordPress themes listed on Themeforest on this site, my goal is to dig through Themeforest and find their best WordPress themes for business and feature them on here.

Karma Themes is a new WordPress theme developer that has a strong focus on quality and service. While Karma Themes only has around 6 or so WordPress themes at this time, they obviously took their time with each of them, as they are all very well designed. Their themes are designed to be very easy to setup and use. Features like extended Theme Options, Short- codes, custom menus, sample content, backgrounds and widgetized areas can be used without a single line of code on all their themes. Karma Themes offers a WordPress theme membership program where you get access to all their current themes, as well as all new themes for $75 a year (uou may keep using all downloaded files even if you don’t renew your membership after the first year). Karma Themes is also focused on providing outstanding technical support, which is obviously something I look for in theme designers.

Cheers,

Dustin

WordPress Business themes from Solostream now on Themespotter

WordPress business and blog themes designed by Solostream are now featured on Themespotter, with additional theme reviews being added in the coming days.

Solostream is currently a 4-person team, headed up by Mike Durkin, and in addition to designing WordPress themes, they offer custom theme design and development.  Solostream’s goal is to create easily accessible content, products and services that help small businesses, organizations and individuals use the Web to:

  1. more quickly launch and grow their online presence.
  2. streamline and simplify their operations.
  3. connect and collaborate with others through the Internet.
What I like the most about Solostream’s themes is the flexibility. Nearly all of their themes can be suitable for blogs, online magazine or news sites, or business websites. Many of their themes include numerous homepage layouts, saving you the time needed to customize your homepage.

Feel free to check out all our Solostream WordPress theme reviews, or Solostream’s website for additional info.

A Few Site Updates

In addition to working on WordPress theme reviews, and adding themes from new theme designers to the site, I’ve been working on making some small improvements to the site.

Some of the recent changes to this site include:

-Breadcrumb Navigation on all theme review pages (as well as a different category-based permalink structure), which, put simply, will hopefully will make it easier to navigate back to previous pages your were on.

-Live Search. I used the WordPress Instant Search Plugin designed by iDesignEco for this. I played around with several different live search plugins (many of which try to do too much) before deciding on this one. The catch with it is it makes search suggestions based on previously searched words on the site (as opposed to nearly any word in the dictionary as some other plugins do), so it will take some time for it to build up its list of search suggestions.

-New default theme sorting. Previously, the Themespotter homepage listed the most recently added WordPress themes, and category pages were set to display the most recently reviewed themes chronologically. While the homepage will continue to display new WordPress themes (basically blog-style), the results under each category will display themes in order of our ranking, with the highest ranked themes on top. Search results will display in the same way; so if you search for ‘WordPress eCommerce themes’, the top ranked themes will display first. The logic behind this is people tend to look for the best WordPress themes (and more specifically, the best WordPress business themes), rather than searching for all available themes, for example. Being that our ranking is obviously arbitrary, and people can easily have different opinions, we still want to feature as many WordPress business themes as possible on this site.

-Switched to using the AddThis WordPress social network sharing plugin, as well as a seperate Google + sharing button.

As always, other suggestions are always more than welcome.

Cheers,

Dustin

WordPress Themes from Organic Themes now on Themespotter.com

Organic Themes was founded by David Morgan and Jeff Milone on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, and as noted on their website, they felt like the business’ name reflects their personal lifestyles, and suited their approach to the design and development of WordPress themes.

One thing you’ll find consistent throughout the WordPress theme reviews on this site is a general preference toward themes that are clean and organized, and that focus on ease-of-use for your website visitors. Along with great content, keeping your website simple is usually better than overloading it with flashy features that don’t serve any real purpose. Organic Themes seems to share my view on this.

Their themes focus on function over flash. You won’t find fancy effects, drop-shadows, excessive animations or other features that are not useful for your website visitors in their themes. Organic Themes’ code is clean, easy to understand, and the theme options are not overwhelming, which allows for faster load times, and easy setup and customization of your website. Organic Themes currently has around 15 WordPress themes available, and it’s obvious that they took their time with each of them, as opposed to rushing out a lot of themes for the sake of having a lot of options.

One of the best aspects of the simple design of their themes is that they all work well on mobile devices, including tablets. Something I’ve noticed recently when doing WordPress theme reviews are things like elaborate horizontal scrolling options being built into themes. While things like this might be cool and creative, they just don’t work well (or at all) on iPads and other mobile devices. More and more people are using tablets as their primary device for reading online, so this is something to keep in mind when shopping for the best WordPress theme for your website.

Organic Themes’ focus is on creating great WordPress themes for business owners, artists and bloggers, and their themes can be customized to suit a wide variety of industries and brands.

Click here to visit Organic Themes’ website

-In addition to selling their WordPress themes on an individual basis, Organic Themes also offers a Developer Pack, which gives you access to all of their current and future themes, design files, theme updates and full access to their support forums. The Developer Pack is available for a one-time price of $249, and can be purchased HERE.

StudioPress Themes and Genesis WordPress Framework now on Themespotter

StudioPress is well known for their excellent Genesis WordPress Framework, which is widely viewed as one of the best WordPress frameworks, especially among pro-bloggers. Not only does Genesis make it easy for people to completely customize their blogs and websites without having to know any code, StudioPress has developed some great child themes (including several business themes) for the Framework.

The Genesis framework and of all of the child themes are very reasonably priced, and StudioPress has a great refund policy, where they will refund you the full price of what you paid within 30 days of your purchase if you are not completely satisfied. They also offer some great advice and tutorials on their website.

StudioPress also offers a great theme package, which gives you the Genesis Framework, plus all their child themes for $299.95. The theme package can be purchased Here.

Premium WordPress Themes for Business – Panda Themes

Premium WordPress business themes from Panda Themes are now featured on Themespotter, with more WordPress theme reviews coming in the next few days. While it might seem like the company was randomly named after panda bears, it’s actually the last name of Karina and Igor, the faces behind Panda Themes.

The Pandas are currently living in Phuket, Thailand, and develop WordPress business themes that are fully customizable and can be easily modified without any coding knowledge. Their themes also feature a large collection of shortcodes, allowing you to create various homepage designs.

Panda Themes offers extensive documentation, as well as a support forum where they personally answer technical questions about their themes. You can check out reviews of their WordPress themes here.

WordPress Business Themes from Premium Press

Premium Press was started by Mark Fail in 2010, and quickly developed a reputation for designing some of the best WordPress themes for business, and their themes are now featured on Themespotter.

One thing I like a lot about Premium Press is that Mark is focused on a select number of WordPress themes (he currently has 6 themes, plus child themes), which he updates and improves over time. Several themes are in their 6th incarnation, showing that Premium Press is committed to improving their themes, and keeping them up to date (rather than just designing themes and then moving on to others). Premium Press is currently a 5-person team consisting of Mark and 4 people devoted to customer service and theme testing.

All Premium Press themes include lifetime support and updates, and can be used on as many websites as you wish, all with a standard license. Their themes are very affordably priced and are a great value for what you get. Premium Press also provides extensive theme documentation and video tutorials on their website, as well as having a community forum, making it easy for anyone to get started with their themes.

Premium Press also has a few new WordPress Business themes in the works, including a Price Comparison Theme and a Client & Employee Management Theme, as well as a Membership Website WordPress Plugin.

You can check out my reviews of Premium Press themes here.

New WordPress Daily Deal Theme on the way from Templatic

I’ve been waiting for a good Daily Deal theme for WordPress for a while, and Templatic currently has one in the works! Daily Deal websites are becoming very popular, with large sites like Groupon, Living Social, Woot and others leading the way, but this area is really just getting started, and there is still plenty of room for entrepreneurs to start new Daily Deal businesses focusing on specific niches or in local areas.

There really aren’t any great WordPress deal-of-the-day themes out there yet, so I’m real excited to see what Templatic has come up with (and hope other WordPress designers will follow suite with their own WordPress Daily Deals theme as well).

Here is a good recent article from the Wall Street Journal discussing daily deal sites), and here is a screen shot of this upcoming WordPress theme:

Premium WordPress Themes and Framework from RichWP now on Themespotter

RichWP was founded by Felix Krusch in Montreal, Canada as a as a consumer centric and easily approachable Premium WordPress Theme Label. Felix takes pride in providing outstanding service and technical support, and his goal with RichWP was to build (in his own words) “a company that listens to you, answers your questions, solves your problems, and participates in the conversation”.

I can vouch for the high level of support RichWP provides, as the Themespotter site was built using the Rich WP WordPress theme framework and a RichWP child theme.

RichWP offers a great WordPress framework and several very high quality child themes. One thing I like about RichWP is that while some other WordPress theme developers build a framework and then churn out tons of child themes just for the sake of offering a lot of themes (many of which might have been thrown together quickly and are not very good), Felix clearly carefully designs the child themes he does offer.

In addition to over 20 design presets that are included with the Rich WP Framework, RichWP currently offers 7 child themes, all of which are very good. Most of the RichWP child themes were designed for businesses, which fits right into to the focus of this site being on the WordPress business themes.

You can visit RichWP’s website at richwp.com, or check out all our RichWP WordPress theme reviews here (more reviews will be posted in the coming days).

WordPress Business Themes by BizzThemes now added

Several great WordPress themes developed by Bizz Themes are now featured on Themespotter.

One of the many great things about WordPress is its worldwide appeal and community. BizzThemes is run by Željan Topić from Slovania. In addition to developing WordPress themes, Zeljan runs a WordPress blog at bizzartic.com, and also offers WordPress customization services.

If the name ‘BizzThemes’ isn’t self-explanatory enough, he focuses on WordPress themes for businesses and pro-bloggers, which its right in with the focus of Themespotter. I’ve reviewed several of his themes over the last week and will have some more posted in the coming days. As always, I try to keep my WordPress theme reviews simple to understand and short enough so they (hopefully) don’t get boring and redundant.

Themes designed by BizzThemes all include Advanced Theme Options, Complete SEO Options and Great Support.

’till next time,

Dustin

Introducing Woo Themes

WooThemes - Made by Designers

I’m happy to announce the addition to Woo Themes to Themespotter. Woo Themes has built up quite a large community of followers over the last few years and there themes have been downloaded close to 2 million times! Woo Themes has become known for their stunning design work and outstanding support.

While their themes cover a huge range of designs, they have created some of the best WordPress themes for business I’ve seen, so I’m looking forward to getting their great themes added to Themespotter.

In addition to selling their WordPress themes on an individual basis, Woo Themes also offers a great WordPress Theme Club, which gives you access to all of their themes, theme updates, new themes each month, support access to forums and tutorials, and the ability to use themes on as many websites as you wish. The Standard Club is $15/month, plus a $125 startup fee, and the Developer’s club (which includes Photoshop files) is $20/month, plus a $200 startup fee. Their theme club is perfect for multi-site owners, freelancers, and web agencies needing access to ALL our themes.

A few site updates

I made a few notable changes to the Themespotter site this morning.

  • The Designer and Price of each theme is now displayed on the right of the WordPress theme image on each details page, along with a button to view a live demo and a button to purchase the theme. I decided to separate this info out from the theme description to make it easier to find, and I think it’s best to make sure this info is always ‘above the fold’.
  • Enabled ‘Infinity Scrolling’. What that fancy name means is that as you scroll down on category page listings (as well as on the home page), it will continue to load more theme posts. This is as opposed to having standard pagination (ie, listing Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Next Page) on the bottom of each category page.

I’m interested in hearing any feedback on these changes. Also, I’m curious if people would find a table listing the top ranked WordPress themes added to the top of each category page. There is currently a widget on the right sidebar displaying this info, but an additional table could display the ‘Top 5 WordPress eCommerce Themes’ in order of rating, for example.

As always, any other feedback is more than welcome at any time!

Cheers, Dustin

Get $100 off Templatic’s WordPress Theme Club

Templatic is running a promotion on their WordPress theme club this week. Their theme club is a great deal for anyone running multiple WordPress themes for business. Their theme club is normally $299, but is being offered for only $199 this week only. The theme club gives you unlimited access to all 60+ of their WordPress business themes.

One important thing to point out is that there is still a $15 monthly fee for their club, but you can cancel your membership and still use the themes (the monthly membership covers future theme updates and unlimited technical support).

You can get the WordPress theme club discount here.

Cool New WordPress Themes on the way from Templatic

I’ve been a fan of Templatic’s WordPress business themes for a while, and it looks like they have some nice looking themes in the works.

Outside of the popular Buddy Press, there aren’t really very many options for people looking to develop their own social networking website in WordPress.

Templatic’s ‘Plus One’ Theme (named after Google’s new +1 feature) will allow visitors to vote on posts they like, without integrating with Facebook (for better or worse).  You can also let your visitors submit an article and keep track of their favorite posts. Will anyone consider purchasing this theme, or is it too much of a Facebook/Google knockoff?

In addition to a WordPress Hotel Booking theme, an Appointment Booking Theme and a WordPress Spa Theme, Templatic also announced that they have several new WordPress eCommerce Themes in the works, including the Storebox Theme (pictured below).

The potential of the StoreBox theme interests me a lot more than Plus One and the other themes they announced. WordPress has so much potential as a fully-functional eCommerce platform, but WordPress theme developers haven’t really been able to come up with a theme as robust as some of the dedicated eCommerce software options out there like Volusion and 3dCart yet. Integration into the WordPress admin is pretty ‘clunky’ on some of the WordPress shopping themes currently available. I know there are a lot of small businesses out there tired of paying over $100 a month for hosted shopping cart software, so I’d love to see WordPress become a more viable option for online stores (especially stores that carry large amounts of inventory, which can be tricky to manage with some of the current themes available).

What features do you want to see in StoreBox and future WordPress commerce and shopping themes?

WordPress Theme Reviews

Welcome to Themespotter, a new WordPress theme marketplace and review site with a focus on WordPress business themes. The site is just getting going, but my goal is to give you honest reviews of WordPress themes, and an easy way to demo and purchase them. It will take some time to get all the great business themes added to the site, but new themes will be reviewed and added daily.

A few new WordPress theme reviews were added today, including Templatic’s WordPress Storefront Theme and the WordPress Events Theme.

Feel free to take off your shoes and dig around the site. I’d love to hear your feedback.

PageLines WordPress Framework and Themes now on Themespotter

I’ve started to add WordPress theme reviews from themes designed by PageLines, in addition to their popular Platform Pro WordPress Framework to Themespotter.  While the Platform Pro Framework is currently PageLines’ biggest focus, they have a few individual premium WordPress themes available, all of which are very nicely designed.

PageLines is the work of Andrew Powers and Adam Munns, and they describe PageLines as a design & development company with a passion for making people happy, and focus on helping people make the most for their business through smarter implementation and great design on the web.

How to Change the Amount of Posts Displayed on the WordPress Admin

Ever find yourself wishing you could easily change the amount of posts displayed on the WordPress admin screen? This is a quick tip that will let you make this change very quickly and easily.

By default, the All Posts page on the WordPress admin displays 20 posts per page. While that might be fine for everyday use, it can make doing bulk edits tedious. Say you have 500 posts on your website, and want to use the WordPress bulk edit tool to assign a new category to all of your posts. Since the bulk edit tool only lets you edit the posts displayed on the page you’re currently on, you will have to to the bulk edit for all 25 pages.

You can easily change the amount of posts the WordPress admin screen displays per page by making an easy change to a file.

Using your favorite FTP client, navigate to wp-admin/includes, and open the post.php file.

The code you want to change is: ‘$posts_per_page = 20;’ In the current version of WordPress (3.3), this code is on line 877.

Simply change 20 to however many posts you want displayed per page on your admin screen and save the file. If you want to do a bulk edit to all 500 of your posts, for example, change this number to 500.

Once you make your bulk edit, it is probably best to change this back to 20, since I typically don’t recommend making any permanent changes to core WP files.

New WordPress Business Themes Increases Software’s Popularity for Small Business Websites

More businesses are turning to WordPress themes to power their website, says Themespotter.com, an aggregator of WordPress themes designed for WordPress.org software. Themespotter.com reports that 69% of WordPress themes purchased by their website visitors over the last 6 months were for small business websites, compared to an average of around 40% over the past two years. An increase in high quality WordPress business themes and web apps built on WordPress.org software is letting entrepreneurs and small businesses take advantage of the features that has made the platform so popular among bloggers.

While WordPress was originally created as blogging software, recently added functionality to the open-sourced software, in addition to some creative theme developers, has resulted in it becoming a popular platform among small businesses. The total amount of premium WordPress business themes purchased from people after visiting Themespotter also nearly doubled from the same period a year ago.

As Themespotter founder Dustin Glass notes, “WordPress is easy to learn how to use, and lets people customize their website without having to learn how to code. WordPress themes let people get an amazing website online within minutes, without needing technical knowledge or a large budget. That makes it such a great option for so many entrepreneurs and small businesses”.

For years, many small business owners had this idea that they had to spend a lot of money for a custom website design in order to justify their business. Web design firms often try to portray website templates as unprofessional and ‘cookie-cutter’. While that might have been true for a long time, website software such as WordPress now provides businesses with the power and flexibility to easily control their own websites. There are now website themes available for nearly every type of small business, ranging from corporate websites to robust eCommerce sites and web apps. Most website themes now contain backend control panels that let people customize their websites without having to touch any code. For businesses looking for a custom website, starting with a template and then using a design firm to modify it can be a great way to save money, and get their websites live faster.

There are many great free WordPress themes available, as well as premium themes that are still very affordable, and often include more robust features, as well as things like free theme updates and technical support. Regarding the increase in the number of WordPress business themes now available, Mr. Glass attributes that in part to professional theme developers realizing the importance of designing websites for niche businesses. “There are only so many different WordPress blog themes that designers can create. Focusing on various niche business themes lets developers be creative and make themes that stand out.

Themespotter expects this trend continue, and has been working to update their website to make it easier for people to search for the best WordPress themes for business, letting people search by category, theme designer, features, style and more.

About Themespotter.com: Founded in March of 2010, Themespotter is a WordPress theme marketplace designed to help small businesses and pro-bloggers find the perfect theme for their website. Themespotter lets people search, sort, and demo all the best WordPress themes from the top theme designers, all in one place.
